City Alcohol Proposal: Jan 21 Vote Result and What's Next

E-mail Print PDF
Dear Wasatch Hollow Community Council,

We had special joint meeting of Yalecrest (YCCC), Wasatch Hollow (WHCC), and Bonneville Hills (BHCC) Community Councils on the Mayor's alcohol proposal Thursday night, Jan. 21.  A few people from the Foothill-Sunnyside Community Council (FSCC) also attended.
This meeting was previously announced in an email to our community and in our community newsletter.  A copy of our newsletter explaining the proposal is available on our Web site, www.wasatchhollowcc.org.  The latest staff report from the Salt Lake City Planning Division on the proposal was released a few hours before our meeting on the 21st.  It is available at http://www.slcgov.com/boards/plancom/2010/January/Alcohol%20Amendments.pdf.  Pay particular attention to the introduction (pages 1-6) and Exhibits F, Draft Text (pages 188-191), G, Draft Land Use Tables (pages 192-230, especially the commercial zones on pages 198-204), and H, Definitions (pages 231-233) - these sections are the substance of the proposal.
The Planning Commission will meet and vote on the proposal at its meeting next Wednesday:
January 27, at 5:45 pm
Room 326, City & County Building, 451 S State St.

The proposal is currently the only item on the agenda for the meeting.  We encourage all community members to take the time to understand the proposal, attend this meeting, and share your views. You can also provide your input by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
If the Planning Commission approves the proposal, which I believe is very likely, it then goes to the City Council for meetings with public discussion and a final vote.  The City Council decides what becomes law in the city. We will try to inform you of when those meetings will be.  You can send your comments to the City Council at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. At our special joint meeting on Jan. 21, nearly 120 votes were cast: 81 from YCCC, 22 from WHCC, 5 from BHCC, 3 from FSCC, and 7 that didn't indicate their community council.
We voted on two questions (yes/no):
1. I would like Salt Lake City to allow new types of alcohol-serving businesses (such as Brewpubs and Dining Clubs) in our neighborhood.
Overall response: 20% yes; 76% no (some did not mark a response)
YCCC: 22% yes; 77% no
WHCC: 18% yes; 73% no
BHCC, FSCC, & blank: 13% yes; 80% no
2. I would like Salt Lake City to provide more details in the proposed alcohol ordinance before it is adopted.
Overall response: 81% yes; 11% no
YCCC: 82% yes; 8% no
WHCC: 82% yes; 14% no
BHCC, FSCC, & blank: 73% yes; 20% no
I will report the results of our meeting to the Planning Commission at their meeting next Wednesday.
